Technical Writer for Poedit (Remote Contract)
Poedit is a widely used cross-platform translation editor for software localization. It helps developers and translators work with gettext, JSON, XLIFF, Qt – formats used widely in software like WordPress, Unreal Engine, Flutter, various web frameworks, Open Source etc.
We’re looking for an experienced technical writer (as a contractor/freelancer) to help create a modern documentation section at https://poedit.net/docs.
My goals are twofold:
- Write clear, helpful documentation that genuinely serves users.
- Build content that also works well for discovery — SEO-friendly, approachable, and showcasing Poedit’s Pro features naturally.
I deeply value good documentation, and its absence in Poedit has long been my biggest failing — one I’m determined to finally make right. The goal isn’t “content farming”, but a professional partnership to make Poedit’s docs great.
What you’ll do
- Write and structure new documentation: user guides, tutorials, feature pages, troubleshooting topics, and concise reference material.
- Collaborate directly with Poedit’s developer for technical accuracy and focus.
- Explain moderately technical topics (gettext, JSON localization, build tools, integrations) in plain, accessible language.
- Craft documentation that’s helpful first, but mindful of search discoverability and subtle product education.
- Optionally, help shape tone, style, and structure guidelines for future docs.
What we’re looking for
- Solid experience writing or editing software documentation, ideally for developer tools, pro apps, or SaaS products.
- Reliability, clarity in communication, and a collaborative attitude.
- Understanding of SEO-aware writing — using structure, phrasing, and internal links effectively without keyword spam.
- Comfortable with Markdown and ideally Git (GitHub/PRs).
- Optional, but nice: familiarity with localization workflows or translation software (or even Poedit).
- You should be comfortable using Poedit directly — exploring features hands-on and, when needed, capturing clean screenshots to illustrate key workflows.
Practical details
- Remote, freelance contract — you manage your own schedule and workload; collaboration is asynchronous and outcome-based.
- Scope: initial project (~20 core pages) with strong potential for ongoing collaboration and long-term maintenance.
- Start: as soon as you’re available.
How to apply
Email me at vaclav@poedit.net with:
- A short intro (who you are, where you’ve written docs before).
- Links to 2–3 relevant writing samples (docs, tutorials, help pages).
- A note about your preferred working arrangement (hourly, per-deliverable, etc.) and an indication of your usual rates.
